Late in the Summer of 2006 the town of Statesville was on edge as 16 year old Julie Stafford went missing.
At the time it was believed that troubles at home caused the teen to run away and that she would eventually turn up.
Feeling this was a non-story, the producers at KNA-TV 13 assigned the report to shlub reporter Thomas Lloyd.
Lloyd was a journeyman who had been in and out of a dozen news outfits in his non-illustrious 20 year career.
It was evident from his first stumbled report that his time at KNA-TV 13 may be nearing an end, however fate had a
different idea.
Soon, another Statesville teen disappeared and then another, then another, and then they started turning
up murdered. In an instant all eyes were on Statesville as the rampage of a serial killer grabbed National attention.
Knowing that this was his make or break moment, Lloyd reached way down inside and summoned the courage to do
something he'd always dreamed of, investigative reporting.
Lloyd was the first to bring a major break in the case with the details of an old pick-up truck that was seen at
each kidnapping. Then he broke the story of a bloody letter drawn on one of the victim's stomachs. And then
his coup de grâce, coining the name of the killer as "Wireface". He appeared on the Today Show, Larry King
called him, "the comeback story of 2006" and even President Bush congratulated him at a press conference.
The following are some of the news reports Lloyd filed during the "Wireface" serial killings in 2006.
